There are two main ways of determining the levels and fidelity of audio. Hz and Kbps. Hertz and Kilobytes per second.
Hz – Hertz is the strength of audio. The human ear can determine and understand the audio levels of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. This defines how long and short the waves are that someone can hear.
Now we can distill a Hz into a file and then compress the sound into a sustainable range of information. Similar to how you can compress an image from 256 x 256 to 1920 x 1080p, there is a significant size difference in quality. When compressing sound, you can lose out on a lot of nuance that sounds create, from fingers on frets to catch breaths in between a vocalists solo.
Kbps – Sound files are defined by kilobytes per second. The oldest forms of audio can be anything from 32 kbps to 64 kbps like cassettes. However, the main argument that people have is between 128 and 256 or 320 kbps.
